VILNIUS -- Lithuanian Prosecutor General Darius Valys has said that he will resign from his post following a traffic accident in which he hit a pedestrian at a crosswalk.

Valys said the accident took place at 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning. He said that he would tender his resignation so as not to hinder the investigation.

Valys collided with a 58-year-old woman at a crosswalk. The woman has reportedly not suffered serious injuries. Valys claimed the rainy weather contributed to the accident.

Following the accident Valys helped the woman into his car and called an ambulance, which also tested him for alcohol consumption.

Lithuania is notorious for its dangerous roads, with one of the highest road death rates in Europe. Earlier this week Lithuanian MP Juozas Palionis (Social Democratic Party) was killed in a car crash.
