RIGA -- Latvia is nearly ready to launch its first satellite, the "Venta-1", Saeima member Dana Reizniece (Union of Greens and Farmers) told reporters yesterday.

The satellite, developed mainly in Ventspils High Technology Park, will primarily be used to aid in navigation around the world. It will be launched either from a spaceport in India at the end of this year or from a platform in Russia next year.

All three Baltic states have space programs, though Latvia is expected to be both the first in space and has the largest satellite design.
