RIGA -- The city of Riga has officially renamed a large courtyard in Pardaugava "Iceland Square" in honor of the country that first recognized Latvia's independence in 1991.

The commemoration comes amid celebrations across the Baltic States of the 20th anniversary of independence from the Soviet Union.

"Twenty years ago, on August 22, Iceland made a historic decision to recognize the restored independence of the Baltic States. This decision was extremely important, because Iceland also inspired other countries to follow its example," said Latvian foreign minister Girts Valdis Kristovskis.
