VILNIUS -- Excavations of the Great Synagogue in Lithuania, which was damaged by the Nazis and later completely demolished by the Soviets, have uncovered the site of the aharon kodesh (Holy Ark).
In a visit to the site, Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius said that the excavation work and the discovery mark an important event "not only for Lithuania, but for the global Jewish community.”
“It is a powerful symbol of both a great Jewish heritage and a great tragedy when the entire Jewish community was destroyed.”
