MINSK -- The Latvian government has sent a note to Belarus demanding an explanation for the arrest of a Latvian journalist who had been covering protests in the country.

Latvian State Radio journalist Ugis Libietis was there legally and had been granted accreditation, but was nonetheless detained while taking photos on his mobile phone of the "silent" protest in Minsk.

"We demand that Belarusian authorities carry out a thorough investigation of the incident and do not permit any further constraints to journalists’ work,” Latvian Foreign Minister Girts Kristovskis said in the note.
