RIGA -- Europe premier gay rights organization has chastized Latvia as one of the least gay-friendly country in the EU.

The report, released by ILGA-Europe, put Cyprus in the worst position, followed by Italy, Latvia and Malta. In general countries in Eastern and Central Europe scored worse than those in Northern and Western Europe.

"Europe considers itself a global leader on human rights and equality, but the map and the index clearly show how far we are from being able to claim the title of LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans-gender] human rights and equality champions," ILGA-Europe's Linda Freimanewas quoted as saying by the EUObserver.
