RIGA -- Latvians celebrate Independence day May 4 with a series of events and ceremonies.
The prominent flower laying ceremony at the freedom monument is scheduled to take place at 10:30, followed by a march of brass band orchestras at 2:00 pm. Free concerts and videos will be shown all day throughout the city -- most notably in Riga's culture centers, Vermanes Garden, on Town Hall Square and the Esplanade -- in honor of the day.
The celebrations mark Latvia's declaration of independence from the Soviet Union in 1990, launching an independence movement that came to fruition in September 1991.
