RIGA -- Nearly 200,000 people have taken part in this year's nationwide spring cleaning initiative, "Liela Talka" ("Big cleanup").

National news agency LETA reported that around 190,000 people turned up for the event, which had been organized at more than 1,300 locations nationwide.

The large turnout marks the most successful such event in Latvian history -- up from around 150,000 people last year and 100,000 people in 2009.
