Encephalitis deaths rise, foreign help needed

RIGA - Deaths from tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) have increased dramatically, causing health officials to look abroad for help.So far this year the disease has claimed the lives of seven people, which is more than during all of 1997.Infections are also up, with 568 cases registered during the first eight months of 1998 compared to just 423 cases during the same period last year.Tick-borne encephalitis is a viral infection of the central nervous system which is transmitted by bites from infected ticks or by consuming unpasteurized dairy products from cows or goats.In mild cases the virus cau...
