VILNIUS - Lithuanian parliamentary speaker Irena Degutiene has announced that she will challenge Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius for leadership of the "Homeland Union - Christian Democrats" at the upcoming party elections.
Though Kubilius has led the party since 2003, Degutiene is a popular figure and pundits expect a close race.
Degutienesaid that even if she wins the elections she will not make a bid for the Prime Minister's post.
