RIGA - Prominent Latvian lawyer Juris Jansons has been officially nominated to take over as the country's Ombudsman.

Jansons has the support of both Harmony Center and the Green's and Farmer's Union, who combined wield enough votes to have the candidate approved by Saeima. This makes it highly likely that he will pass the parliamentary vote and be able to take up the key human-rights post.

Jansons, an attorney at law and liquidator of the health insurance company "Rigas slimokase", has said that if elected he would look to strengthen the position.

The current Ombudsman, Romans Apsiti, is due to step down from the position on Feb. 28.
