Fire department to pay 100,000 for "Talsi Tragedy"

RIGA - The Latvian Supreme Court has ruled that the national Fire and Rescue Service must pay 100,000 Ls in compensation to Andris Zass over the 1997 "Talsi Tragedy".

In the summer of 1997, nine children were killed when a fire truck basket broke during a summer demonstration. There were 22 people, mostly children, in the basket at the time. The maximum capacity for the basket was just four adults.

The Riga Regional Court has received several lawsuits worth several million lats altogether. The court has already ruled on several of theses lawsuits, ordering compensation of hundreds of thousands of lats, LETA reported.
