Former police detained followed deadly robbery

JEKABPILS - Four of the five people arrested for an armed robbery in the Latvian town of Jekabpils that ended with the death of an officer were themselves former police officers, national news agency LETA reported.

Two of the detainees were from the "Alfa" elite police response squad, while another two were formerly with the Tukums police.

Five men Tuesday morning attempted to rob a gamin hall and fled the scene when police arrived. The chase ended in a shoot-out that killed one officer and injured several more. Three of the suspects were also injured in the fire-fight.
