RIGA - Latvian tax authorities have uncovered a massive scheme involving a prominent but unnamed meatpacking plant and meat retail chain.
The scheme used fake invoices to under-report the amount of taxable product that was delivered to the retail chains.
Cash registers were then reprogrammed at the retail outlets such that the discrepencies would not show up in the receipts. Police have not revealed the name of the company involved or the amount of taxes that they suspect was avoided through the scheme.
