TALLINN - "The Banker", a magazine owned by Financial Times Group, has named Estonian finance minister Jürgen Ligi the "European finance minister of the year".

In addition to overseeing Estonian accession into the eurozone, Ligi implemented a series of measures that have helped the country remain on track through a crisis that devastated the other Baltic States.

"It is a painful irony that these measures helped Estonia qualify to enter the Eurozone, just as the latter is battered by the failure of some existing members to pursue such rigorous fiscal policy," the magazine said.
