RIGA - Latvian authorities have declared an official nationwide state of emergency due to the widespread electricity outages that have affected tens of thousands of residents.

The state of emergency is applicable to 40 regions of the country, with the worst-affected areas in the eastern part of the country.

Some 40,00 thousand people lost power last week as snow and ice piled up as severe weather conditions mounted. Nearly 10,000 housholds are still without electricity.
