RIGA - Each decade brings new challenges and tasks, that is why we should take with us what we need to achieve our goals - determination, self-respect and the ability to cooperate with one another - Latvian President Valdis Zatlers said in his New Year’s Eve address to the nation, reports news agency LETA. At the start of his address, the president congratulated the Latvian people: “I hope the new year brings you much joy and many smiles. I hope you all have a good night tonight, and that you achieve your hopes and dreams!”

“In a few moments, that first decade of the century will come to an end. It was a dynamic ten years for Latvia. We have witnessed many important events and changes. We have achieved a lot in these years, especially during the past two years,” highlighted the president.

“Now we can confidently look to the future. The next year will be easier for all of us, and I am confident it will be a more successful year. That is why, at this moment, we should leave behind the things that might hinder us to move towards the future - lack of self-respect, lack of trust in yourselves and the persons around you, complaining about everything and jealousy,” the president said.

“The roots of the Latvian nation are hundreds of years deep, and its summit becomes larger with each child that is born. That is why we must renew our traditions of having large families. The future guarantees of the Latvian nation are our children. All children. Those who have been born in Latvia, as well as those who have been born abroad, but will someday return to the fatherland. Each child is a continuation of our people,” the president said.

At the end of his address, the president wished everyone love within their families and a happy new year.
