RIGA - Latvian political leaders have condemned the desecration of over 100 gravestones in New Jewish Cemetery on Lizuma Street in Riga Tuesday night.
Latvian President Valdis Zatlers told reporters that everything must be done to find the culprits. "Such actions cannot and will not be permitted," he said.
A cemetery security guard reported to the police Wednesday morning that overnight white swastikas had been painted on more than 100 of the graves. The perpetrators of a similar incident in 2003 were arrested and prosecuted.
