RIGA - Latvian parliament has rejected a bill that would have made Bible studies a mandatory part of primary school education.

Enrollment in Bible studies is currently optional - alongside a course in ethics - but parents have the right to choose for children less than 14 years old. Both courses are funded out of the state budget.

The proposal had been sumitted by the political party "For a Good Latvia" ahead of elections later this year.
