RIGA - The Latvian Competition Council is set to rule on the merger of two of the country's leading telecommunications companies.

On July 27, nozare.lv reported that "Baltkom" and "Izzi" had announced plans to merge, a move that would form one of the largest telecom companies in the Baltic States.

"The goal of the merger is to improve the service provided over the united territory of the two companies, as well as concentrate the companies' resources on the development of the existing services, the introduction of modern technology, and the creation of real competition in the telecommunications market, which is currently dominated by 'Lattelecom'," said said Baltkom press secretary Lauris Klavins.
