PALERMO - Kaia Kanepi has become the first Estonian woman to win a Women's Tennis Association title after defeating top seeded Flavia Pennetta 6-4, 6-3 on Sunda.
Kanepi, the fifth seed, had beaten Pennetta twice but never on clay.
In 2008, Kanepi became the first Estonian to make it to the quarters of a major when she made the last eight of the French Open. She fell out of the top 100 this year before rebounding at Wimbledon.
