VILNIUS - Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius has called on Belarus to cancel plans to build a new nuclear power plant near the Lithuanian border.

Belarus announced plans to construct the new power plant shortly after Lithuania formulated its own plans for a plant. Lithuania is still searching for investors for the project, which four countries - the three Baltic States and Poland - have said they will take part in.

The prime minister has said that plans for the Belarussian plant will not deter Lithuania from constructing its own new nuclear power plant to replace the one at Ignalina which was shut down earlier this year.
