TALLINN - Estonian Olympic gold-medalist skier Kristina Smigun-Vaehi has announced that she will retire from sport in order to spend more time with her family.

Smigun-Vaehi became one of the country's most high-profile athletes after becoming the first Estonian woman to win Olympic gold in 2006, taking both the 7.5 km + 7.5 km double pursuit and the 10km classic.

"It's been the hardest decision I have ever made in my life: to keep doing sport or to dedicate myself to my child and family," she said.
