VILNIUS - Lithuania has gifted a large bronze statue of musician Frank Zappa to the US city of Baltimore, the rock artist's home town.

Frank Zappa enjoyed a large following in Lithuania, where the statue was commissioned in 1995. It has taken 15 years for the country to follow through with plans to gift the monument to Baltimore.

The announcement was met with a slew of odd-ball comments, with the head of UPS Lithuania - who will be in charge of transporting the monument - comparing the gift to the statue of liberty in New York. One of the authors of the idea, Saulius Paukstys, meanwhile, said the statue "will make Lithuania's and Vilnius’ names famous in the world."
