Illegal alcohol sales are booming as consumers stay away from shops

RIGA - Alcohol market sales have decreased following the general retail market trend in Latvia. In 2009, sales volumes dropped by 29 percent. But this doesn’t mean that people drink less alcohol in Latvia. The increase of excise taxes and an absence of control from the government caused a boom in illegal alcohol production.
