ROME -- Latvian tennis star Ernests Gulbis has defeated world number one player Roger Federer 2-6, 6-1, 7-5 in the second round of the Rome Masters tournament on Tuesday.

It was a landmark victory for the Latvian player, whose exciting second set comback helped him ensure an easier road for the rest of the tournament.

In the third round, Gulbis will meet either Italian Filipo Volandri or Frenchman Julien Benneteau.
