RIGA - Latvia's parliament last week passed a set of two laws aimed at ensuring the political independence of beurocratic officials in the country.

The new legislation obliges civil servants to follow only professional criteria and disregard any political influences while performing their office duties.

Under the new amendments to the Law on Disciplinary Liability of the State Civil Service Employees, civil servants may face disciplinary sanctions for breach of political neutrality.
