Alcohol sales ban pushed through

RIGA - Latvian Parliament has pushed through a law banning alcohol sales on Sept. 1 - the first day of school - despite the law being previously shot down in committee.

A total of 37 parliament deputies voted for the ban, 31 were opposed, 10 abstained, national news agency LETA reported.

In a seperate plenary vote MPs rejected upping the legal age for purchase of alcoholic beverages from 18 to 21.
