ESTONIAN ARCHIPELAGO: There is more to do on vacation here than just lie on the beach.

The small Estonian island of Muhu was included on the list of top ten islands that are “off the beaten track,” compiled by the tourism Web site www.jetsetter.com, reports news agency LETA. Muhu was in 9th position on another list, posted by www.timesofmalta.com, in an article “Travel Picks: Top 10 islands off the beaten track.”
The article mentions that Muhu has less than 2,000 inhabitants, has an operating windmill, maintains national traditions and has a small luxury hotel and spa called Padaste manor. First place in the listing went to Mustique island in the Grenadines, followed by Canouan in Saint Vincent and Grenadines, Mauritius, Fernando de Noronha in Brazil, Lipari Harbor in the Bahamas, Kangaroo in Australia, Hvar in Croatia, Muhu in Estonia and Culebra between Puerto Rico and the Virgin islands.
Imre Sooaar, one of the owners of the Padaste manor, said that Muhu’s strength is that it can offer a lot of different places and activities to very different people. He said another strength is that the tourism businesses of the island cooperate and work together under the Muhu Tourism Association.
Sooaar said that the praise of respected publications and travel letters is very important as many more people visit the manor and the island after reading these materials, rather than if they learned about the place in “real advertising.” o
