VILNIUS - Seima (Lithuanian parliament) speaker Irena Degutienehas questioned whether the EU will be able to maintain solidarity now that the Lisbon treaty has come into force.

"Will the solidarity principle enshrined in the Lisbon Treaty remain only a 'paper' concept, or will we be able to depend on it when deciding such issues as Lithuanian energy security or relations with Russia?" the speaker said in a press release.

"The citizens of the states of the European Union must be the masters of European integration and not the witnesses of a technocratic process," she said.

The Lisbon Treaty, a massive treaty meant to streamline EU institutions adn decision making, went into force on Tuesday.
