TALLINN - Ericsson started operations in Tallinn producing mobile communications' and broadband network equipment, reports news agency LETA. The Swedish telecoms company took over most of the factory, formerly operated by its sub-contractor Elcoteq, with a workforce of 1,200 employees.

Estonia's Minister of Economic Affairs and Communications Juhan Parts, taking part of the opening ceremony, said that Ericsson's decision was significant for several reasons. "Firstly, Estonia competed against several other countries and the decision for investment is a confirmation of Estonia's competitiveness," he said. He added that while enterprises are cautious today, Ericssons' step should be an example for Estonian as well as Scandinavian companies. He went on to say that "I believe Ericsson opening its facility will create broader cooperation options with our universities and innovative enterprises."

Ericsson's vice president in charge of production Jan Wassenius said that this is significant for their group. "Developing mobile broadband technology and re-designing current broadband networks into IP-based ones is a strategic priority for Ericsson," he said. Wassenius added that the opening of the plant in Estonia was important as the company is planning to fulfill its long-term promises to maintain market position and increase customer confidence.
