Lithuania to review Guantanamo inmates

VILNIUS- Lithuanian Foreign Minister Vygaudas Usackas and Interior Minister Raimundas Palaitis as well as Head of the State Security Department Povilas Malakauskas will come together to discuss Lithuania's capacity for considering the US-filed request to take in a few of Guantanamo detention camp detainees.

Lithuania on Feb 5 received a request to take in two Guantanamo detainees, the foreign minister had previously announced.


Unofficial information has it that the inmates are Uzbek.


The said two detainees pose no threat to Lithuania's national security, Usackas said invoking information currently available to him. Political refuge may be in the cards for the two persons, said the minister, however adding that before the transfer can be made, the inmates need to consent to the potential move and Lithuania needs testimony as to the threat they would be facing if returned to their homeland.


"This issue should be dealt with within a few months' time," said Usackas, adding that talks with the US will be bipartite, but take into consideration the join European Union (EU) stance on the issue.
