Government agrees on budget cuts

TALLINN - The Estonian government has announced that it has come to an agreement on slashing this year's budget by 8 billion kroons (511 million euros).

The government press office said that by noon on Friday ministries must submit their draft budgets to the Finance Ministry. About 10 legal amendments will have to be adoptedalong with the supplementary budget.

The government has said it wants to approve the budget-slashing bill together with related amendments at an emergency meeting on Feb. 18 and send them to the parliament on the same day to be handled as a matter linked to aconfidence vote in the government.

Lawmakers are expected to start discussing the cuts on Friday, Feb. 20.
