Mobile voting coming soon to Estonia

TALLINN- In another technologically innovative move, the Estonian parliament hasapproved the use of mobile phones for voter authentication in the 2011elections.

Voters will be authenticated by using a SIM card that holds a digitalcertificate.

"You still need a computer and the Internet, but now you will have achoice of using your ID card plus card reader or a mobile ID to authenticateyourself," parliamentarian Silver Meikar a told magazine PC World.

Meikar went on to say that parliament hopes that mobile and online votingwill help make voting abroad easier.

However, Estoniais still far from making the whole process mobile. For security reasons, it iscurrently not possible to develop software for each individual operating systemin Estonia.
