TALLINN- In another technologically innovative move, the Estonian parliament has approved the use of mobile phones for voter authentication in the 2011 elections.

Voters will be authenticated by using a SIM card that holds a digital certificate.

"You still need a computer and the Internet, but now you will have a choice of using your ID card plus card reader or a mobile ID to authenticate yourself," parliamentarian Silver Meikar a told magazine PC World.

Meikar went on to say that parliament hopes that mobile and online voting will help make voting abroad easier.

However, Estonia is still far from making the whole process mobile. For security reasons, it is currently not possible to develop software for each individual operating system in Estonia.
