Double military murder in Latvia

RIGA- A court in Jelgava ruled to arrest a23-year old man suspected of killing two Latvian soldiers last weekend.

Court representatives did not reveal the identity of the suspect, but saidthat the court ruling can be appealed within seven days at the Zemgale Regional Court.

Police have reportedly solved the double murder, committed in central Latvialast weekend. Investigators believe that the 23-year old man who was detainedSaturday night is responsible for the killing. The suspect is also linked tothe military.

The alleged murderer was reportedly an acquaintance of the victims, and hadmet with them to recover an allegedly small debt.

National Armed Forces (NAF) spokesman Uldis Davidovs told reporters that one of the victims, aboatswain of the naval forces, had begun his military service in 1999 and hadbeen serving with the navy since 2006.

Another victim, a retired first lieutenant, began his service in 1997 andhad been serving with the Air Force since 2002.

The military spokesman declined to comment on the suspect's reported linkswith the army.

The bodies of two men with gunshot head wounds were found in a SUV in Zaleniekiin the Jelgava region early on Saturday. Both victims are about 30-years-old.
