VILNIUS - The Lithuanian Defense Ministry has announced plans to dismantle and shred the massive 27-year-old frigate Zemaitis, after finding the ship to be unfit for further operations.

"Repairs and modernization of the frigate, which is worn in the physicaland the technological sense, is economically irrational," reads supportingdocuments to the draft resolution.

Manufactured in Zelenodalsk, Russia, in 1981, the frigate's residualvalue was 2,317,309 litas (671,684 euros) on March 2 2008.

Zemaitis will be replaced by one of the three multi-functionalFlyvefisken-type patrol vessels purchased from Denmark in 2007.
