RIGA - Latvian Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins has said that joining the eurozone should be considered a matter of national security.
"The example of Iceland clearly demonstrates how
vulnerable a small economy could be during such international financial
downturn. It, more than ever, proves the necessity faced by Latvia of
consistent work to join the eurozone as soon as possible. I believe no
other target to be set by the central bank in cooperation with Latvian
government could be more important than implementation of this target. It
is not only the issue of Latvian economy. It is the issue of security," the minister said at a People's Party congress n Saturday.
"The residents of Latvia must be sure that Latvian government in this
situation cooperates with the EU partners by seeking the correct
solutions. On the national level, we must simultaneously take steps for
enhancing financial stability," he said.
