Professors go on strike

KLAIPEDA - Students and employees at the Lithuanian Academy of PhysicalEducation and Universities of Klaipeda and Siauliai are planning a precautionary strike in a bid to get more state funding.

Employees of most other higher education institutions will remain intheir workplaces during the hours of strike (10 a.m.- 12 p.m.) and will notgather into rallies.

By means of the strike higher education employees will demand for highereducation schools to be compensated for the funds lost by relieving studentsin state financed slots from paying partial tuition.

The association is also demanding to raise wages for operatingpersonnel in higher education and include this employee group into along-term wage raising program in 2009-2011.

The association notes that should the government and ministry fail tosatisfy the said demands by Oct. 30, it retains its right to organize awidespread and long-term strike of higher education employees.
