Latvia aims for Guiness record

RIGA -- The first few celebrity participants have registered for the "Run! for Latvia" relay race which will attempt to break the Guiness world record for "the most participants taking part in a 100 meter relay over 24 hours."

The first person to register for the race, which will take place on Oct. 18 and 19 as a part of Latvia's 90th anniversary celebrations, was Paraolympic gold medalist Aigars Apinis.

The current record for the event is held by Singapore's SaintNicholas Girls School, which set the record on March 29 with 1848 participants in total. For Latvia to break the GuinnessRecord in this category, at least 2000 people must participate in therun, www.lv90.lv, the official Web site for the anniversary celebrations, said.

The Web site said that Latvia currently holds a number of world records, including the northernmost vineyard, the heaviest rasols salad in the world, the only woman to win the formula racing series, and the highest altitude bike ride.
