RIGA - Eduard Stiprais, head of the Latvian president's chancellery, has resigned from his post and announced that he will return to diplomatic service.

EdgarsRinkevics, a long-standing Defense Ministry state secretary, has been appointed to replace Stiprais as  President Valdis Zatlers' top advisor.

The president told journalists that Rinkevics would be able to focus on domestic politics better than his predecessor -- who was formerly Latvia's representative in Brussels.

"We are facing quite intensivecircumstances in domestic politics. The president's chancery will have alot of work to deal with. I need an instrument to work with in domesticpolitics in the future," the president said.
