Opposition calls for new political system

VILNIUS - The Lithuanian Front Party has called on the country toconsider dividing the parliament into upper and lower chambers.

The party, which split from the Social Democrats earlierthis year, saidin a press release that the upper chamber - the Senate - shouldmonitor the quality of the laws adopted by the lower chamber - the Seimas. 

The press release also called for a reduction of the totalnumber of parliamentarians from 141 in the current unicameral system to a totalof 121 's including 36 in the upper chamber and 85 in the lower.

The party also suggested that the Constitution allow thepopulation to dismiss the Seimas. Currently, the procedure can only beperformed by the president or Parliament itself.
