Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins nominates Paegle, a parliamentarian who currently heads the European Affairs Committee and a member of the ruling People's party, for the position last week. Zatlers had previously criticized the candidate, saying that an important diplomatic position should not be given to a political appointee.
The president repeatedly said that the Foreign Ministry should form its diplomat academy or school. "It is important that a person is being prepared for a diplomatic career for a while," he said.
Zatlers announced his decision in an interview with Latvian commercial radio SWH on Friday.
It will now be up to the foreign minister to nominate a new candidate.
