President rejects UN ambassador

RIGA - Latvian President Valdis Zatlers has rejected Vaira Paeglefor the position of ambassador to the UN.

Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins nominates Paegle, aparliamentarian who currently heads the European Affairs Committee and a memberof the ruling People's party, for the position last week. Zatlers hadpreviously criticized the candidate, saying that an important diplomaticposition should not be given to a political appointee.

The president repeatedly said that the Foreign Ministry should form itsdiplomat academy or school. "It is important that a person is being preparedfor a diplomatic career for a while," he said.

Zatlers announced his decision in an interview with Latvian commercial radioSWH on Friday.

It will now be up to the foreign minister to nominate a newcandidate.
