Latvia loses world cup qualifier match

RIGA - Latvia has lost a World Cup qualifier match to visiting Greece,relegating the country to second place in their group after last weeks win over Moldova.

Greecewon the match, which was held in Riga'sSkonto Hall on Wednesday, with a score of 2-0 after Theofoanis Gekas nailed a cross from closerange in the 10th minute and sealed the win with a header in the 49th to claim the only two goals of the game.

Despite the loss, Latvian head coach Aleksandrs Starkovssaid he thought the players put in a good game and that his goal in thequalifier matches was to give the other teams a tough match.

"Greeceis the favorite to win. It is not obligatory [for us] to qualify, but we willaim to make the blood of our opponents dirty," he told journalists after the match. 

Latviais now in second place in their group, which includes Greece,Israel, Luxembourg,Switzerland andMoldova. Onlythe top two teams in the group will advance.
