Greecewon the match, which was held in Riga's Skonto Hall on Wednesday, with a score of 2-0 after Theofoanis Gekas nailed a cross from close range in the 10th minute and sealed the win with a header in the 49th to claim the only two goals of the game.
Despite the loss, Latvian head coach Aleksandrs Starkovs said he thought the players put in a good game and that his goal in the qualifier matches was to give the other teams a tough match.
"Greeceis the favorite to win. It is not obligatory [for us] to qualify, but we will aim to make the blood of our opponents dirty," he told journalists after the match.
Latviais now in second place in their group, which includes Greece,Israel, Luxembourg,Switzerland andMoldova. Only the top two teams in the group will advance.
