FARMING: Organic farms see growth spurt from EU funds

RIGA - Organic farms in Latvia have been growing at a steady rate, nearly tripling in number since 2005. This is due in large part to better EU inspection systems and increased direct funding to farmers. However, in 2003, an action plan was created to stimulate more interest in organic farming. This, along with increased state support and local interest, has served to help organic farmers in the industry and stimulate economic growth for many of Latvia's less lucrative farms.
