Estonian drug smuggling ring busted

TALLINN - Police in Finlandhave arrested seven members of an Estonian gang that smuggled millions of eurosworth of drugs into the country.

Finnish police said the drugs, the value of which isestimated at some 3.4 million euros, were primarily distributed in the city of Tampere. The Finnish Iltalehti daily said thatthe leaders of the gang had been based in Estonia.

In the past year and a half, police estimate that the gangmanaged to smuggle 270 kilograms of hashish, more than 17 kilograms of amphetamines, 6,000tablets of Subutex and 400 grams of cocaine into Finland.

The Estonian ringleaders were responsible for financing the drug businessbut reportedly kept clear of activities directly connected with smuggling. Thenarcotics were taken into Finlandin trucks alongside legal goods.
