TALLINN - Police in Finlandhave arrested seven members of an Estonian gang that smuggled millions of euros worth of drugs into the country.

Finnish police said the drugs, the value of which is estimated at some 3.4 million euros, were primarily distributed in the city of Tampere. The Finnish Iltalehti daily said that the leaders of the gang had been based in Estonia.

In the past year and a half, police estimate that the gang managed to smuggle 270 kilograms of hashish, more than 17 kilograms of amphetamines, 6,000 tablets of Subutex and 400 grams of cocaine into Finland.

The Estonian ringleaders were responsible for financing the drug business but reportedly kept clear of activities directly connected with smuggling. The narcotics were taken into Finlandin trucks alongside legal goods.
