RIGA - Latvian Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins has appointed Vaira Paegle, a parliamentarian with the ruling People's Party, as the new ambassador to the United Nations.

Paegle, who heads the European Affairs Committee in the legislature, said she would strive to find new partners in the UN.

"As Latviahas limited diplomatic resources, the UN is the place to seek new cooperation partners in all areas," she said.

Paegle's candidacy will still have to be assessed by the Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee before the president will be able to make a final decision on her suitability to the post.
