Latvian athletes took home one gold, one silver and one bronzemedal from the Games, giving the country one of the top medal-to-populationratios in the world.
"The Beijing Olympic cycle has closed and the London Olympic cycle is starting and I believe you are preparing for even betterstarts. My family and I had the delight of being with you in Beijing.We supported you as much as we could and enjoyed your results together with you,"the president said in a meeting with the athletes.
The president was criticized in the local media for his decisionto stay in Beijing to watch theGames instead of joining the other Baltic presidents in a trip to Georgia after the fighting broke out.
