Drunk canal bathers

RIGA- Five drunk British men took a bath in the Riga canal by the Latvian National Opera house and are facing a fine of 50 lats (EUR 71).

Riga Regional Police Department representative Zane Berzina told The Baltic News Service that at 9 p.m. on Aug. 17, when the Riga city festival was still taking place in the Latvian capital, five drunk British nationals were detained for bathing in the Riga canal.

The detained men, ages 27-28, said they did not know it was forbidden to bathe in the canal.

Administrative offence protocols have been drawn up and the maximum punishment for the offense is a 50 lats fine.
