VILNIUS-Lithuania is beginning preparation of specialists of nuclear energy. The Ingalina power plant which is set to close in the near future, is not a concern to specialists who are starting plans for the construction of a new one.
Specialists of nuclear energy will be trained from the beginning of the new school year inVilniusUniversity and Kaunas University of Technology. Physicists will be trained inVilniusand engineers in Kaunas.
As predicted, after the nuclear power plant is constructed in Lithuania, the demand for specialists will rise, and an increased number of qualified specialists in Lithuania would increase not only the intellectual and economic potential in the country, but also its competitive ability on an international level.
No specialists of nuclear energy are currently being trained in Lithuania, however Kaunas University of Technology used to train specialists of a similar profile a few years back.
The new nuclear plant is expected to potentially begin operation in 2016-2018.
Upon accession to the EU, Lithuania has become committed to closing the second reactor of the Ignalina power plant by the end of 2009, the first reactor was closed in the end of 2004.
