Baltic ministries keep in touch

RIGA -- Latvian Foreign Ministry State Secretary Normans Penke met with Secretary General Matti Maasikas of the Estonian Foreign Ministry and State Secretary Deividas Matulionis of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry on 4 April in Riga.

At the meeting the officials considered such topical issues as the Latvian presidency at the Council of the Baltic Sea States, an EU strategy for the Baltic Sea region, energy, and relations with Russia.

Current events in international politics - the European Neighbourhood Policy, European external operation services, and security policy issues of importance to the Baltic states 's were also discussed. The state secretaries reached an agreement on the need to raise awareness, within the EU and internationally, about the crimes of totalitarian communism.  

All three Baltic state secretaries expressed the need to continue co-operation on a regular basis when solving issues of significance to the Baltic states.
